Day Twenty-Two:

36675 / 50000 words. 73% done!

Isn't it the long weekend yet?

Oh, dear God, right about now the only thing I want to do is get through the week and get to the weekend. We're supposed to go down to Elizabeth's for Thanksgiving, then I get to spend three lovely, wonderful days with my ass nailed to a chair cranking out wordage like you wouldn't believe.

Not that I really need to, mind you -- I've been surprisingly good about keeping up with my quota (perhaps the Muse, mojito-soaked sot that she is, has finally clued into the fact that I'm a professional and is showing up when I need her instead of when the mood strikes her). It's just that the idea of finishing early appeals to me, especially since 50K isn't going to be my actual stopping place. No salable novel these days is only 50K long -- minimum for a non-YA novel is 100K, and longer is usually preferred. I think I'll aim for 95K as my first draft length, and jigger that as necessary (there are lots of places where I need to do some research, which will add content, so I'm not fussed about stopping below 100K for the first draft -- the final version is going to be longer than that, I know fully well).

So if I finish Nanowrimo early, that means that I can mentally move onto Stage Two and start working on the remaining 45K, of which I've set a goal of December 18 as a finishing date. There are perfectly good reasons for this deadline, which I will explain after I achieve it (kind of a long story) -- in the meantime, I still have to finish this chunk, so back to work....
