Day Ten:

16684 / 50000 words. 33% done!

Another late night

Granted, it was due to me shooting myself in the foot and watching The Big Bang Theory and the CSI crossover ep on CSI: Miami. That being said, I did nail my word count and sandwich in a necessary scene which will set up some action later in the story -- I'm not happy with how it plays, but I'll tweak it in the edit.

The interesting thing about writing a mystery (remember, I'm new to all of this) is that I have to start from the end, figure out whodunnit and why, and then work backwards to salt clues throughout the story AND plant reasonable red herrings and suspects so that the reader has enough to work with, but won't be absolutely sure of the actual killer's identity until Poe and Dodgson figure it out (ideally, anyway -- people like Lyndon will probably be able to spot Old Chokey right off the bat). The scene I did tonight reflects this -- I need the reader to think back to it later in the story and wonder, "Okay, could X be the killer?" That being said, I think I oversold it -- either I have to tone down the character, or I may need to have him trade personality traits with another person. In fact, come to think of it that might be the best solution -- it would actually provide a chance for character growth.

In other news, I really need to stop reading Brent Spiner's tweets during Nanowrimo because he was talking about Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly last night, and I would up blowing forty-five minutes on YouTube looking up some of their best scenes so that I could articulate why I prefer Kelly to Astaire (in short, I want to watch Astaire -- I want to DANCE with Kelly). Damn you, Intertubes and social network sites!
