What is WRONG with people?

According to Dallas police a 27-year-old woman threw her two children from the Jim Miller Road overpass into rush hour traffic on Interstate 30 this morning. She then leaped 22 feet to the pavement below. Apparently she had some sort of altercation with the kids' grandfather while parked at a nearby gas station; she stormed out of the car, kids in tow, to the nearby overpass, pitched the struggling kids over, then followed.

The miracle is that all three of them survived -- the boys weren't hit by any vehicles, and are currently at Children's Medical Center with broken bones and some internal injuries but should pull through. Their mother, and I use the term conditionally, was reported hit by a car, is in critical condition, and the Dallas police really, REALLY want to have a word with her once her condition is stabilized.

Jesus Christ. You want to top yourself for some reason, fine, feel free. But don't bring your kids along with you. If things are so bad for whatever reason that you can't deal with them, put them into freaking foster care. Yeah, it may suck for them, but at least they'll still be alive. And can you imagine how some poor schmuck just trying to get to work would've felt if s/he'd hit and killed one of those kids?

Suddenly the big ol' chain link fences on the overpasses in Chicago make a lot more sense...

Meanwhile, back at the ranch

I remember when a Classics professor at UIC once used that phrase during a discussion of The Illiad. But I digress. I got up at oh dark thirty this morning and sorta finished the first draft of "Dash Manning - Galactic Ranger!"

I say "sorta" because I realized there's a big chunk missing from the middle that needs to get fixed in the edit. Which is okay because now I know what needs to go there -- it's just a matter of getting my three heroes (Captain Dash Manning, his plucky girl sidekick Lt. Ginny Marsden, and Prince Nigel of Bombadour) from their spaceship into the secret Ring of Death deep inside infamous Zintharian gambling hell the Realm of Unutterable Delights and faced off against some big ol' bad guys while Feleena, Queen of the Cat Women, watches with evil glee.

Hey, I said this was 50's SF pastiche, and I meant it. Of course, what's going to happen when Dash squares off against Feleena's prized fighter Leo will be...interesting...
