NEW YEAR'S DAY
Resolutions?
Oh, please. I don't have resolutions, I have a hard deadline in the form of my 25th HS reunion, so it's back to the gym for me.
As for the writing, that's not a resolution so much as a daily task, like brushing my teeth or pilling the fabulous furbag. I did rejoin Novel in 90 to finish Pharaoh of the Lone Star State, however, so wordage will be at right, as usual.
This is what happens when I listen to the radio
This may be because I'm not feeling all that well (no, I'm not hungover, but I do seem to have a dilly of a cold), but I've noticed something recently. Since I just want some music in the background as I clean, quilt etc. I've had the radio tuned to the local "mix" station (quotes used deliberately as "mix" apparently means "playing the same rotation of music 24 times a day with the occasional change thrown in there to justify the term 'mix'." Then again, if I wanted a real mix station I'd listen to Jack FM. But I digress).
In addition to the fabulous new song of Santana's (with Chad Kroeger, lead singer of Nickelback -- I THOUGHT that guitarwork was far too subtle and complex to be Nickelback's), Pink's glorious Fuck You to pushy men in bars ("You and Your Hand Tonight") and a bewildering quilt of somewhat whiny ballads, I've also heard multiple repetitions of a song by Blue October entitled "Calling You." This song features the following deathless lyrics:
So expect me to be
Calling you to see
If you're okay when I'm not around
Asking "if you love me"
I love the way you make it sound
Calling you to see
Do I try too hard to make you smile?
To make us smile[Chorus]
I will keep calling you to see
If you're sleeping, are you dreaming
If you're dreaming, are you dreaming of me
I can't believe you actually picked me
I'm not sure if this is the new theme song for stalkers or the hopelessly co-dependent. "I will keep calling you to see/if you're sleeping, are you dreaming/if you're dreaming, are you dreaming of me" -- Jesus, Allah and Zoroaster, if someone called me up in the middle of the night and asked me that, I would reply, "No, darling, I was actually dreaming of a restraining order and a large bodyguard named Guido who comes with his own brass knuckles."
It's not quite as bad as "I'll Be Watching You," however, so that's a mercy. But sheesh...
My goodness, the Hugo ballots are online
As you know (Bob), the Hugo ballots are now online in PDF form at http://www.denvention.org/hugos/index.php,
and the online voting will shortly be available. Folks who are registered
to attend Denvention or who attended Nippon 2007 are eligible to vote.
As this is the case, allow me to remind all you wonderful people that my novella Sabre Dance (Yard Dog Press, pub 9/1/2007, word count 35K) is eligible for a Novella slot on the 2007 Hugos. If you don't already have it (and if not, why not?), it's available as half of Double Dog #4 from Yard Dog Press; alternately, contact me for a PDF.
In addition to this, the splendiferous semiprozine Helix SF is eligible in the Semiprozine category, and its Steamed Editor William Sanders in the Best Editor, Short Form category. If you don't believe me, head on over to the site and read some of the damn good stuff we have there.
And if you're going to nominate works for the Hugos, please keep this info in mind, and we thank you for your support!
