Quilting Neep!
Evacuate now if you're not interested in fiber arts!
So the new baby quilt is finally underway after a surprising amount of mental wrangling. See, the mermaid fabric I picked can be fussy cut into 6.5" squares, with each square featuring a mermaid (shown at left -- there are eight or nine different mermaids, so I'm doing a lot of fussy cutting). I could make a 10" or 12" square with that, easy, but I don't like using big squares for baby quilts. After sketching out various patch patterns, I finally decided to turn the mermaid squares into snowball squares and match them with nine patch squares -- I've used it before to good effect, and it has the additional benefit of going together fairly quickly.
I also ditched the dyed fabric because it didn't look good with the other patches. Luckily there's a decent quilt shop in the area; not only do they stock Ocean Songs fabric (hey, you never know when you'll need more fabric), but they also had a great dappled light blue fabric that coordinated quite well with the mermaids fabric.
So being me (AKA as impatient as a seven-year old at 5:00 AM on Christmas morning), I skipped lunch, went home and tried sewing together a snowball square and a nine patch square. I think it's going to work out well, especially with the Ocean Songs seahorses fabric as a border. Hee.
