An extremely pleasant weekend

Which is nice, because I caught up with my deficit and if I get a move on I should finish this sucker by the end of April, which will make me very happy. In the meantime, a good friend prompted me to actually write something that I spewed out as a joke, so it looks like "The Brewery of Doom" will be joining the to-do list pretty soon (at least I have the ending already -- "Conan the Bubbarian? I kinda liked the sound of that").

On the health side of things, we bought my aging and increasingly infirm ass a new mattress, to be delivered this Friday, which is good because if I sleep on my old one for much longer I suspect I'm going to paralyze my entire left side in one big pinched nerve. But damn, mattresses are expensive.

We also saw 300 last night, which prompted me to wonder about the sanity of the critics who have been complaining that it's too artificial, too violent, not compelling. It's a FRANK MILLER COMIC, you morons. Have you not seen SIN CITY? Yes, it was gory in an oddly detached way (lots of spraying blood via CGI, but none of it ever got on the Spartans), yes it was obviously artificial -- because we were watching a graphic novel brought to life on the screen. Yes, the characters were seriously OTT -- see the bit about a comic book. Personally, I think the Spartans were completely fucked up mentally, but I still enjoyed the movie (and I was extremely pleased as a woman and a feminist when the entire audience cheered during a pertinent scene near the end with the Spartan Queen Gorgo and the councilman who betrayed her).

And my God, that shot of a naked Gerard Butler overlooking the nighttime city of Sparta should be framed and hung in the Louvre. Woof.
