Apparently this is Blue Monday

Researchers (and really, who pays them for this sort of thing?) have found that today is the most depressing day of the year. So if you're looking longingly at that 7-story fall outside your office window, now you know why.

As for me, I'm not depressed -- bored and desperately in need of kicking some ass, but not depressed. Actually, the asskicking thing is probably related to seeing UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION on Saturday, which in my extremely exalted opinion was a hell of a lot better than the critics are painting it. I have no idea why they're complaining about the "overcomplicated" plot -- I was able to follow it without a scorecard, and I'll even recap to prove it:

Selene, a vampire and former Death Dealer, and her new squeeze Michael, a doctor and brand-new hybrid vampire/werewolf, are on the run from her old coven, who are NOT happy that she sliced off the top half of their leader's skull in the previous movie. Michael is a hybrid because he is the descendent of the original immortal, Alexander Corvinus, and has the ability to safely combine the vampire and werewolf virii thanks to mutated genes passed down by Great-Granddad Alex.

However, there's someone else with those same genes -- Alexander's son Marcus, now the only surviving vampire elder. When Marcus accidentially swallows werewolf blood, he turns into a hybrid, too, and goes rogue in order to track down the location of his twin brother William, the first werewolf. William has been locked away for centuries by the order of Viktor (the elder who was sliced and diced by Selene) on the basis that he was too dangerous to leave loose -- Marcus disagrees, and wants him released. In order to release William, however, Marcus needs 1) the location of his prison, and 2) the key. As it turns out, both the location and the key can be found with Selene, so Marcus goes after her and Michael.

Seriously, what's so hard to understand about this? Yes, it helps if you saw the first movie, but there's enough of a recap in the beginning (and oh, my God, but I LOVE that armor!) to explain what's going on. I know it's much easier to go see something like HOSTEL and just watch the blood squirt for two and a half hours, but it can be kinda fun to watch a movie and think at the same time.

Back to the asskicking thing, however -- watching a woman use guns, blades and other weaponry always instigates my "Yeah, let me GET IN THERE" reflex, so I'm still kinda in the fight part of the fight or flight spectrum. Even Lyndon noticed this when we were driving back from the theater, and he said something that, to me, was the most flattering thing:

"You know, hon, I'm aware that you tend to project this image of being a sweet, lovable earth mother who bakes cookies, but I know you're really a vicious woman who likes to play with blades. And it's one of the things I love about you."

I do adore him so.
