NEW YEAR'S EVE

Hellooooooo, 2007!

The place: Casa del Fletcher

The dinner: homemade chicken tikka masala, basmati rice and naan bread.

The drink: a nice German mulled wine.

The entertainment: season one of DEAD LIKE ME.

The verdict: a low-key but very nifty way to spend New Year's Eve. Cuddled up on the couch with my honey, digesting a lovely Indian dinner, warm mulled wine on the end table, with the cat purring on the back of the couch -- it's not quite as wild and crazy as a NYE rave in a London warehouse, but it's perfectly suitable for me, especially since I feel like I've been worked over by a Mafia enforcer with anger management issues from hauling a dryer up a flight of stairs and plumbing it in.

Allow me to explain -- back in 2001 we rented a washer/dryer set when we moved into our apartment, on the basis that we didn't think we were going to be here all that long and it made more sense that buying a set. Five years and $2,400 later (yeah, yeah, but we had a couple of rough years in there) the dryer is on the verge of crapping out, making a noise like the restless undead every time you dry anything more than a couple of cotton shirts. When we got back from Chicago I stopped in at the leasing office to tell them about it, and got the response, "Another one? Well, okay, I'll put you on the list."

Not reassuring, especially since we still have a bag full of laundry from Chicago. So Lyndon, being the logical, single-minded engineer that he is, stepped up to the plate and found a very nice Kenmore model on sale at Sears with 7.5 cf capacity and an internal rack that lets you dry sneakers. Sears, however, wouldn't be able to deliver it until Wednesday; I start my new job that day, so there wouldn't be anyone at home to receive the delivery.

As if that would stop a single-minded engineer, especially since he has a pickup truck, and according to Sears one guy and a large appliance hand truck is all that's needed to haul one up the stairs. Furthermore, U-Haul rents this kind of hand truck, so Lyndon bogged off to rent one and some ramps, stop at Sears, get the new dryer and haul it home. Admittedly, getting it off the back of the truck was a bit of an adventure, and wheeling the sucker upstairs was even more fun. But wheel it we did, and plumb it in I did, and Lyndon has informed the leasing office that they can come pick up the rental anytime. I figure we'll get a matching washer sometime next month, and that will reduce our rent by $40/month, which is a goodness.

I think they're delivering the washer, though. I'm getting too old for this crap.
