Crikey, it's a beaut!
Sorry
-- I was on the hunt today for some plain old purple microspun
sport yarn from Lion, and you'd think I was looking for yarn made from Heidi
Klum's pubic hair, it was so hard to find. Three stores later, I finally tracked
down enough to make a pair of mittens for my niece Clara, because -- well, do
y'all remember how I knitted her a pair of purple socks with fuzzy cuffs? I
called my sister to find out how well they went down (with autistic kids, you
never know -- they could find a texture or color unpleasant), and Stacy said,
"Oh, she loved them. Except. . .she doesn't wear them as socks.
She wears them as mittens."
Oh. Well, hey, at least she likes them, although apparently she gets a bit confused about her thumbs not fitting properly into the heels of the socks. Since I had some of the yarn left over anyway, I told Stacy that I would make her a proper pair of mittens in the same style, and to send me the length of her hand and thumb.
I
then sat down and tried making one mitten using a pattern I found on the web,
but the decrease at the top was some seriously screwed up shit and the thumb
gasket wound up having a huge hole in it (although the fact that I actually
made the damn thing is still pretty impressive). I sighed and pitched it, then
went back to the web for another pattern -- found a nice one, too, with a logical
decrease pattern. By then, however, I was down to only a few yards of the purple
microspun yarn, hence my search for a replacement ball (thank you, Hancock's,
for being a real fabric store). Hopefully I can find some time this week to
get those cranked out, and Clara can stop wearing her socks on her hands.
