A bullet dodged. . .

As you may remember (Bob), I mentioned that Comcast has taken over the cable reins for our complex. What I didn't know was that US Online sold them the cable AND DSL concession, and our DSL was supposed to stop working as of Monday. Aie, doubleplusungood and fuckity fuck to boot. Lyndon found this out when he called to schedule an installation of the cable box, and found out that a charge on our Comcast bill marked "flink" stood for f-link, which will be our new cable internet connection.

I may have commented before that I would rather lose cable before DSL; Lyndon feels the same way, so the fact that it's still working is of great relief, and may the geniuses at USO who organized this little clusterfuck develop terminal thrush, mainly because the Comcast guy won't be there until Monday. If I'd had to spend the weekend without DSL and didn't have a con or something else to take up my time, I would have been extremely displeased.

Yes, I like my DSL -- your point?. I can go without it if necessary (see my general posting history during cons if you don't believe me), but I don't want to do that because someone else screwed the pooch and didn't bother to tell us about it.

One good thing about this, however -- USO originally subcontracted its DSL service to a company called BroadBandNow, which supplied fairly decent service. Then BBNow transferred its concession to a company called Ygnition, and we lost newsgroups, the throughput rate dropped noticeably and our rates went up. With Comcast, the upload rate will be slower than the download rate, but the download rate is significantly faster than what we had before, and it's cheaper than Ygnition, may an unclean yak sit on their dinner. If we get access to a newsgroup server again, I shall call it good.

. . .a mitten finished

I shall close with a bit of arts 'n' crafts news -- in our drive to fill the gaping holes in our Wall O' Video (which probably needs to be renamed to Wall O' DVD), Lyndon's been bringing home movies like SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW, ANCHORMAN and other goodies.

Thanks to these (because I like to do handwork while watching TV), I have one mitten finished for Clara, and the other one should be wrapped up tonight, deus volent and the crick don't rise. Pictures shall be forthcoming, selah.

Speaking of ANCHORMAN, is it my imagination, or is Steve Carell kinda hot in a buttoned-down sad yet sorta insane businessman way? And, oh my sweet mother of storms, he's playing Uncle Arthur in the BEWITCHED movie? Yeah, that's some good casting, bay-bee.
