This is why Houstonians have gills

My beloved left this morning on a business trip to the very southernmost tip of Texas. As is our wont, he text messaged me to let me know he landed safely in Houston, completing the first leg of the trip. The landing message, however, also included the data that he felt weirdly faint and short of breath as soon as they landed.

After thoughts of incipient widowhood finished scampering through my head, I remembered something and text messaged him back. He called me, saying, "I'm getting on the commuter plane so I have to keep this short, but -- humidity?"

I explained that the swamp-like humidity of Houston hit non-locals like a waterlogged pillow to the face, and his lungs were just freaking out at the high percentage of water vapor to breathable air. Relieved that he wasn't dying, he told me he loved me and hung up. I think he'll adjust in a couple of hours, as long as he doesn't have to do anything aerobic-intensive.

He comes from a pale blue people, you must remember -- Empire or no, they just weren't designed to handle Texas temps plus Houston humidity. Too bad he can't wring out his lungs.

An interesting side effect of BC pills

Back when my reproductive system was a blithely random thing, I used to get PMS maybe twice a year, at the most. Now that I'm taking Yasmin, however, I have noticed that somewhere in the 72 hours before I start taking the placebo pills, I develop a raging case of depression and irrational anger like nobody's business.

Like, oh yesterday. I'm not quite as homicidal now, but yesterday I sent a set of ANGEL series 5 DVDs flying, quite literally wanted to strangle someone, and snarled the live long day. Maybe it's best that Lyndon is out of town for the next couple of days, after all, for his own safety.

And yes, I know progesterone is supposed to reduce the effects of PMS -- if this is reduced, I must be a bloodsoaked bitch goddess when I get the full dose.

And finally, a question about protocol

This just struck me as odd. A US delegation consisting of President and Mrs. Bush, President Clinton, President Bush Sr. and Condoleeza Rice viewed the body of Pope John Paul II today.

From Salon:

Former President Carter had hoped to go as well, but backed off when told the Vatican had limited the official delegation to five "and there were also others who were eager to attend," said Jon Moore, a spokesman for the Carter Center in Atlanta. Moore said the Carters "always relish memories" of the pope's 1979 visit to Washington, the only time a pope has been to the White House.

I would've thought that a former prez, especially one who has history with JPII, outranks the Secretary of State when it comes to situations like this. Huh.
