Babies, babies, babies

Whee! Julia came up from Houston today for our friend Lisa Holcomb's baby shower, and is crashing here tonight. I must say, you haven't really experienced a baby shower until you've been to one run for and by SF fans -- there were many, many con references, at least six men were present, and the expectant parents received books among the more expected presents (after all, you have to start your child off early by reading to them, right?)

All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, and I would have had even more fun if I hadn't been up until 3:00 am last night making valances for the dining room. It was my own damn fault, of course -- I stopped off at Hancock's after work yesterday to get the fabric (this beautiful stained glass-like pattern that looks spectacular with the sunlight streaming through it). Then, being the incorrigible show-off that I am, I thought, "Gee, wouldn't it be nice if I could get all the dining room valances done before Julia gets here."

Next thing I knew, it was 2:30 am and I was screwing another set of curtain rods into the bay window of the dining room for the second valance. Oy.

I actually got the third one cut out, before realizing that I had to get up around 8 or 9 to clean the place before Julia arrived. That had a marvelous effect of making me very exhausted all of a sudden, and I sloped off to bed until 9:00 am this morning, when I lurched up to clean the guest bathroom, kitchen, living and run a vacuum throughout the place. Luckily it was all still pretty clean from Stacy's visit last week, so I had it done in about an hour or so, but Mellie is still a very tired bunny.

The windows do look nice, though. Now I just have to finish the center one, then make four more for the living room. Whee.

Anyway, the afternoon was spent shopping for appropriate shower gifts, then a couple of hours at the shower itself, and now we're in our jammies and sprawling about the place watching Fiddler on the Roof and eating Julia's dessert creation of Blue Bell Country Vanilla ice cream, eggnog and Amaretto. This woman needs to run a con suite one of these fine days, she really does.

Julia, put down the shotgun, I was joking!
