Another year, another round of archives

Congratulate me -- Nekkid, Clueless and Feelin' Good is officially two years old today. From its humble and rather lumpy beginnings as Hoosier Meanderings, it's grown into something so incredibly incriminating that even I blush to think of it.

I have to admit, it's kinda cool to go back and read over some of these entries -- Stockholm was actually a pretty cool place to live, and Blonde Ambition really did drive me up a wall (according to my friends in Kista she's gone on to torture other technical writers, poor bastards). Reading over the entries about the various cons (at least the ones where I bothered to post con reports -- bad Mellie, no biscuit) is especially enlightening -- I didn't know I had that much fun. Fancy that.

Of course, I've learned a lot in these two years of on-line journaling:

  1. Pseudonyms are not only a good idea, they allow you to get incredibly creative when complaining about a person, company or other entity. And if you get called on it later on, at least you have some maneuvering room -- "Why, yes, you are the only blonde manager I have, and you do have a habit of invading my personal space to the point where defenestration becomes incredibly inviting, but I wasn't talking about you, honest. . .".
  2. Put some horizontal and vertical space around pictures -- a ratio of 10 and 5 pixels respectively works quite well.
  3. Be prepared to have anything you write here come back and haunt you, because it will, often when you're off on a business trip and can't defend yourself with your usual verve and witty flair. Grrrr. . .
  4. If you're going to use pictures, try to compress them as much as possible -- not everyone has DSL.
  5. Be aware that friends, family members and coworkers can stumble across your journal if they do a web search on your name, so discussing your sexual fetish for goat leather and plum jelly probably isn't a good idea if you're a deacon in the local Episcopalian church. Unless the pastor goes in for that sort of thing, of course.
  6. Don't worry about being entertaining -- in the long run, being honest works a lot better.
  7. Unless you're a major company, frames are evil.
  8. Spellcheckers and HTML review commands are a goodness.
  9. There's more than enough pretentiousness in the world -- putting more in an on-line journal doesn't impress anyone with an IQ higher than that of trout and just makes you look like an artsy little shit.

And now, onward to the third year! Excelsior!
