Ahhhhhhhhh.
. .
Well, it took
me until 3:00 am this morning to finish "Female of the Species"
for FutureClassics, but I did finish it and mail it off. I really
do need to make more of an effort to meet that dratted deadline.
However, I was
still on a roll, so this morning I pulled out "I Play Dead"
and revised the section where Carnie revealed what she was (this
was the part that apparently pulled the slush reader at F&SF
right out of the story). I have to say, it reads a lot better this
way, not nearly as mushy and distracting but still with the same
erotic impact. So I did a final spellcheck, printed it off and sent
it to Asimov's. Which means, of course, that I won't hear anything
about it until, oh, the beginning of December, but that's fine --
one way or the other, I'm bloody well determined to crack Asimov's.
And then I can
only assume God smiled upon me for being such a diligent writer,
because the heavens opened and a miracle occurred -- an angel who
knew of my financial straits and how it meant I couldn't go to Worldcon
this year sent me an email offering to subsidize my expenses and
get me to Philly for the con. And I use the term "angel"
most specifically, both in the Broadway sense and in the "kind
and generous beyond belief" sense. I accepted with deep gratitude,
because at this point I really, really need a break from unemployment
stress and being alone all the time. My only hope is that someday
I'm solvent again and can do this sort of thing for another writer
down on his or her luck -- it's important, karmically speaking,
to pay this sort of thing forward as well as back.
So it looks
like I'll be in Philadelphia from August 19th through September
3rd. Watch the tabloids for further news!
