I've Always
Depended on the Kindess of Fandom
Phoo. Remember
how I'd talked about getting that pay web job back on Wednesday,
and how it was going to be just enough to cover my utilities? Well,
this was certainly true, until I realized that it was highly unlikely
I'd be paid before the phone bill was due, which meant it would
be cut off AND I 'd have to pay a reconnection fee.
Color Melanie
quite depressed at this. And then yet another wonderful, generous
person stepped in and offered to help me over this hump. I swear
to God, I am one of the luckiest people on the planet -- yeah, the
money and job situation sucks, but I have my health, I have Lyndon
(on a remote basis, anyway), and I have some of the best, most generous
friends in the world. Thank you all very, very much -- you mean
a lot to me, and not only do I plan on paying you all back, but
I'll also be paying forward in your names once I'm solvent again.
In another example
of local kindness and solidarity, Judy Roberson-Steele
called up tonight and invited me out for dinner and a movie. Judy's
a mom of two kids, so movies on Friday are her way of getting out
of the house for a bit, and she was nice enough to take me along
for the ride.
We decided on
Stonebriar Mall for our excursion, and RAT RACE for the evening's
fare. Stonebriar is a newish mall in Frisco that rises out of the
landscape like a huge, horking cement mesa -- I first went there
with Julia back in February when we were looking at apartments,
and the leasing office here told me how to get out to Stonebriar
with the explanation that I couldn't miss it. And boy, they weren't
kidding.
Among its other
attractions is a brand new Dave 'n' Busters, which seems to combine
the best of a restaurant, pool hall and midway into one big, glowing
mix. Since the rest of the mall was closing by the time we got there
and we didn't want to wait for the Cheesecake Factory lines to subside,
we headed into DnB's and ate at one of the midway bars. The food
was good and reasonably priced, the bartender was a charming lad
named Jeff, and Judy and I had a great time talking about writing,
cons, motherhood, the sucky job market and how we had to bring Julia
to DnB's because they had Godiva liqueur.
Well, it's true
-- they did.
Anyway, we scoffed
dinner and headed upstairs to the AMC theater, where we settled
in for RAT RACE. RR is essentially a modern twist on IT'S
MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD -- a group of strangers are gathered
together, told there's a fortune waiting for them at a remote location,
first one wins, GO. In this case, John Cleese plays the owner of
a casino (who arranges the race as an "Survivor"-like
betting opportunity for his wealthy clients) as Basil Fawlty's more
successful cousin, and Rowan Atkinson plays a most charmingly confused
and rubber-jointed Italian who's absolutely delighted about the
idea of being in a race -- when he's not in a narcoleptic doze,
that is.
All in all,
it's a good popcorn movie -- we cackled our way through it, which
is pretty much all you can ask. And now, I have to finish my entry
for FutureClassics
-- dratted deadlines. . .
