It's good
to relax
Ahhhhhhhh. I
just came back from a most excellent evening -- Jerry,
who is an angel and a friend as well as a fellow FutureClassics
writer, had been talking to me about what he needed to do with regards
to fixing the drywall in his bathroom (he's in the middle of remodeling
it, and when the old wallpaper came off the top layer of the drywall
came with it). So he asked me to come over and take a look at it,
and eat dinner while I was there.
Oh, man, I haven't
been this stuffed or relaxed in months. Jerry's wife Becky
is a peach and a half, and his daughters are sweeties, so we had
a great time at the most delicious dinner I've had in weeks (Steak!
Potatoes! Real beef protein and complex carbohydrates! Yea!), then
I played a game of pool with his youngest daughter Jessie while
we talked about pretty much everything under the sun.
I didn't realize
how circumscribed my conversation had become in the last few months.
Admittedly, some of it is due to the fact that I spend so much bloody
time alone, but a lot of it is also due to the fact that I'm living
in the buckle of the Bible Belt and they just don't talk about certain
things down here. But
Jerry and Becky are both from California, so it was a chance to
kick back and let rip. Ahhhhhhhhh -- that felt wonderful.
And I needed
it, I really did. No, there's been no news on the job front, but
once again people are stepping in to help (you know who you are,
and I adore you to pieces, I really do). In fact, I think I may
wind up writing an article for the SFWA Bulletin about the collective
quality of fandom and how fans and writers (often one and the same)
will group together and help out someone who's down on their luck.
Hey, gotta keep
my non-fiction writing skills sharp, right? You never know when
they'll be called upon again.
