Oh, My Stars!

This is a baby quilt I did for my friend Anna. I'd also officiated at her wedding (a pagan handfasting in the woods), so I knew she wanted something a little different from the usual bunnies and duckies.

Since she'd decorated the nursery in a fantasy woodland theme, I came up with the idea of doing a starry sky quilt. And then I found this gorgeous fabric with pictures of the various astrological signs -- whee!

I wound up fussy cutting a square with each sign, then using that as the center of a monkey wrench block. I put six blocks on each side of the quilt, with a marbled dark blue sashing and a matching border, then hand quilted the entire thing in geometrically placed circles.

This was my first attempt at hand quilting, and I incurred a number of toecatchers, but the end result was pretty, which is all that matters.
