Steampunk Fairy

One of my local cons was using the theme "Southern Steam" this year, and I thought I would make a Steampunk Fairy as an accessory for my various panels. Unfortunately, the danger that is doing laundry threw my back out last week, and pretty much put paid to my hopes of attending the con. However, I was able to sit up for short stretches of time, and during these short stretches I retired to the Lair of Doom and worked on my fairy -- I might not be able to attend the con, but by Harry I would still indulge in my tribute to Southern Steam.

The Steampunk Fairy, aka Miss Rosalind Gideon-Smythe, Gentlewoman of Adventure.

Of course, any Gentlewoman of Adventure worth the name needs goggles -- you never know when you'll need to weld plates onto an ethership. The goggles are constructed from plastic rounds back-painted black, leather side pieces and straps, and copper-painted yarn.

Miss Rosalind's shirtwaist, leather corset with brass accent, bustle skirt and lace-up boots.

As a Steampunk Fairy, Miss Rosalind requires wings that are apropos to her position -- hence, the brass, leather, copper and rubber wings attached to the steam engine.

The steam engine, created from a crazy straw, bottle cap, jewelry findings, and metallic paints.

Another rear view.

Miss Rosalind needed a slightly more ornate hairstyle than fleece would allow, so she has individual yarn strands sewn onto her head and then braided in two front braids and two rear braids. The front braids are tucked up under her hair.

Side view of Miss Rosalind's hair.

The rear two braids -- one was curled into a bun, and the other tucked up underneath it.

And now, time for a nice cup of tea!
