Melanie
Fletcher is an expatriate Chicagoan who currently lives in North Dallas
with her husband the Bodacious Brit™ and their two fabulous furbags
JJ and Jordan. JJ is a cat who thinks he's a dog, and Jordan is a cat
who thinks he's Anna Nicole Smith. Only Melanie could have pets like
these.
At night, she turns into SF Writer Girl, and has the SFWA membership
card to prove it. Her fiction can be
found in anthologies from Circlet Press, Yard Dog Press and DAW Books,
as well as online zines such as Quantum
Muse and Helix
SF. With regards to novel-length work, she is currently finishing
her YA fantasy novel Undercover
Godmother and editing her SF novel White
Knight, Queen Alice. And while it's seriously overdue for another
episode, she also maintains an extremely tongue-in-cheek cyberpunk serial
here called Hoosier Red. In related activities, she fences
with the SFWA
Musketeers and performs with
the Feral Chihuahuas in Yard
Dog Road Shows at SF conventions around the country.
During the day, she works as a technical writer and web designer. In fact, if you want to tally up all the things she can do, she can write, paint, sing, dance, act, fence, play a number of instruments, build dollhouses, knit, crochet, quilt, do needlepoint, cross stitch and crewelwork, moderate panels, fix cars, do simple plumbing and electrical work, do somewhat more complex carpentry, make a damn good deep dish pizza from scratch, and marry people. When she refers to herself as a Renaissance Babe, she's not kidding.
She's also a member of the Starfleet Ladies Auxiliary and Embroidery/Baking Society. It's been described as "the longest-running slumber party in history," and includes writers Janis Cortese, Julia Kosatka and Kellie Matthews, FAQMistress Cindy Tittle Moore, and Dr. Who New Adventures author Kate Orman as members. Lots of good stuff here.
While the society's name is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, she does indulge in a lot of quilting and needlework, and claims that her yarn jones is under control.
